Baila Brazil - Balé De Rua
RATING ★★★★
Royal Festival Hall, until 15th August 2015
06.08.2015
Balé De Rua is essentially a street dance group, 'always urban but with a marked Brazilian identity'. The ensemble of 15 men, 2 women and musicians filled the stage with energy, colour, vigour and joy.
This extravaganza was utterly breathtaking. Not only did the group display faultless dance skills, the use of gymnastics, acrobatics and live music further contributed to this spectacle. Alexia Falcão Lopes' rich and sultry voice added that extra sparkle to performance.
The scaffolding-like backdrop, with innovative set pieces and colourful red-themed costumes, created Rio on the Southbank. The performance was uplifting, exciting and even included moments of audience participation.
Afterwards, we were lucky enough to take part in a dance master-class, lead by the entire group. We were taught supposedly simple steps which gradually built up to a full, some more full than others, routine. The ballroom in the Royal Festival Hall took on a carnival-party atmosphere, and was a real highlight to the evening.
With huge thanks to Theatre Bloggers - what a wonderful occasion.
