Six - Lucy Moss & Toby Marlow
RATING ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Directed by Lucy Moss & Jamie Armitage
Arts Theatre
October 2018
I have been lucky enough to experience Six three times now. Yes three. I saw it when it first went to the Edinburgh fringe in 2017 with the impressive crew of Cambridge students who made it what it is today. Fast-forwarding a year, Six was back, but this time at the Underbelly and with a new cast and crew. I had to see it again. It would have been rude not to. It moved straight down from the Fringe and landed in the Arts Theatre where it is running until October 14th.
If you haven’t heard about this utterly brilliant masterpiece (which you should have) then here we go: Henry VIII’s six wives battle it out to decide who had it worst in a pop-musical-style-concert. Genius.
Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote Six when they were students together at Cambridge. It’s sassy, clever, empowering, uplighting and hilarious. Aragon, Boleyn, Seymour, Cleves, Howard and Parr are utterly fed up of being known for one thing: Henry. They decide to take it into their own hands and tell their side of history, or ‘her-story’.
Each Tudor queen has their turn in the spotlight, each with a unique sound inspired by contemporary pop-culture artists like Lily Allen, Beyonce and Adele, to name but a few. There is a constant oscillation between historic references and modern innuendos. The vocals are impeccable as the wives sing their 'histo-re-mix' about Henry's unsavoury manners before tying together in the most satisfying and appropriate ending.
Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived. We all reluctantly learnt that famous phrase at school and Six brings it back into our lives but this time, all for the right reasons. The history lesson we wish we were actually given...
All the numbers are on Spotify under 'Six the Musical' so have a listen and it is back at the Arts Theatre in 2019 for a five month run, so GO GO GO!
