23rd July 2018

Thoughtful Theatre has always had a 'theatre reviews only' vibe but after experiencing the joy that is Suspiciously Cheap Comedy (SCC) I couldn't resist doing a quick write-up. This is the second SCC night I have attended. My first was in Salford, near Manchester, where I learnt that these fantastically cheap 'material testing' comedy nights were a regular occurrence at its usual home in Bethanl Green, London. I also learnt from Sara Pascoe that if I ever needed to kill someone, as long as they weren't diabetic, then I should inject them with insulin as they won't test for it in a post-mortem. So, I booked a couple of £4 tickets and went along on the 23rd July, not quite sure what to expect from my second experience.

I was not to be disappointed. Kiri Pritchard-McLean, also the host of Amusical, delighted as usual, with her quick wit and hilarious audience interaction welcoming everyone right from the word go. She is unbelievably watchable and immediately started testing out new material with us. She welcomes each act on and off the stage, something I looked forward to over the evening.

A fantastic array of comedians took to the stage. Russel Howard, Rose Matafeo, Brennan Reece, Geins Family Gift and my personal favourites Goose and Yuriko Kotani. From mime to insane sarcasm, a posh-boy caricature and dead-pan comedy, each act offered something utterly unique to the evening.

SCC is particularly special because you are aware that the acts, no matter how well-known, are testing material for the first time. This brings about a welcomed relaxed and informal atmosphere...
I couldn't recommend this night highly enough. Get yourself a ticket to the next event on the 30th September or catch most of the acts at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August with their full-length shows!
